About Square Meaters

SQUARE MEATERS cattle were developed in the early 1990s and released in the open market in 1996 specifically to produce tender young beef for Australia’s premium domestic market. Square Meaters evolved from high performance and early maturing Murray Grey cattle and bulls which were rigorously selected to reproduce highly desirable characteristics demanded by Australian consumers, butchers and breeders.

About Square Meaters

A desirable side affect from developing these medium framed cattle was a smallness when compared to their ancestors. This smallness is reflected in a shortening of leg length and not a general miniaturisation of the animal.

Key Traits Of The Square Meater Are:

• A quiet temperament for ease of handling with minimal equipment.
• Excellent fertility and mothering abilities
• Fantastic feed converters and “doing ability”
• Easily finished on grass
• Ease of calving due to low birth weight calves
(20-30kgs)
• Medium frame and early maturing and growth pattern
• Well defined muscling and even fat cover
• Polled (no horns)

SQUARE MEATER FEMALES can be registered as Class A or Class B depending upon their measurement at 12 months of age: Class A - 100-110 cm at top of shoulder; Class B - over 110 cm.

SQUARE MEATER BULLS must be between 103 and 113 cm at the top of the shoulder at 12 months of age to be registered.
